Uniper SE has launched an open season for a hydrogen import terminal venture in Wilhelmshaven, Germany.

The terminal is designed to obtain as much as 2.6 million metric tons a 12 months of ammonia, sufficient to provide about 350,000 metric tons each year of hydrogen, based on German energy and gasoline utility Uniper. The ammonia can be processed on-site at a large-scale ammonia cracker to provide hydrogen that can be fed into the German core hydrogen community.

Underneath section 1 of the open season, market members are to submit expressions of curiosity for his or her desired capability and pay a participation price. Uniper will then affirm reservation.

“Within the second section, Heads of Phrases can be issued as foundation for the Terminal Use Settlement which can be developed with the collaborating shippers”, Uniper mentioned in a press launch.

The signing of the terminal use settlement will commit capability to chose companions.

Moreover the ammonia import terminal, Uniper is planning a 1-gigawatt electrolysis plant at its Wilhelmshaven website to provide hydrogen through the use of wind electrical energy to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen.

The terminal and electrolyzer tasks can be sufficient to ship 10-20 p.c of Germany’s hydrogen demand from 2030, Uniper says on its web site.

Final 12 months Uniper and thyssenkrupp Uhde GmbH signed a “framework settlement” for the development of business ammonia vegetation towards the institution of a scalable hydrogen import terminal in Wilhelmshaven.

The deal licenses thyssenkrupp Uhde’s ammonia cracking know-how to Uniper for as much as six vegetation with a mixed capability of seven,200 metric tons of ammonia per day.

“The license package deal contains engineering, companies and the availability of most important gear and catalysts”, a joint assertion mentioned November 26, 2025.

“Uniper is at present driving ahead the pre-FEED (front-end engineering and design) for a industrial plant at its Wilhelmshaven website. This pre-FEED section will set up the design foundation for the venture, outline its scope in additional element, additional evaluation its technoeconomic feasibility and scale back its uncertainties and dangers”.

In one other venture in Wilhelmshaven, Uniper and Slovenia’s NGEN energetske resitve d.o.o. lately started building for a 50-megawatt (MW) battery power storage venture on the location of Uniper’s former coal energy plant.

“The battery power storage system in Wilhelmshaven will steadiness out short-term fluctuations within the energy grid attributable to the feed-in of wind and photo voltaic power sooner or later”, mentioned a joint assertion April 9, 2026. “On this method, the system will sustainably strengthen the combination of renewable energies in addition to grid stability”.

The companions count on to place the venture into service by yearend.

“The battery storage facility is a part of Uniper’s Vitality Transformation Hub Nordwest (ETHNw) and, following the Voslapper Groden PV park, is the second venture in Wilhelmshaven to now enter the implementation section”, the assertion mentioned. “Throughout the ETHNw, Uniper is bringing collectively main tasks with the goal of creating an built-in hydrogen infrastructure together with renewable power amenities”.

The photo voltaic venture on the ash landfill of the previous coal plant will generate about 17,500 MW hours a 12 months, sufficient to energy as much as 4,500 households based mostly on a mean family consumption of about 3,300 kilowatt hours each year, based on Uniper.

Commissioning for the photo voltaic venture is focused for the primary half of 2026.
