Shell Begins Oil Manufacturing at GKGJE Part 4 Offshore Borneo

Shell PLC and its companions have begun producing petroleum within the Gumusut-Kakap-Geronggong-Jagus East (GKGJE) Part 4 deepwater challenge on the border of Malaysia and Brunei.

The consortium expects part 4 to common 21,000 barrels of oil equal a day. The event consists of three oil manufacturing wells and one water injector. Two of the 4 wells are in Malaysia and the opposite two are in Brunei. The Gumusut and Kakap fields are in Malaysia whereas the Geronggong and Jagus-East fields are in Brunei.

“GKGJE Part 4 contributes in direction of Shell’s world dedication to carry onstream new upstream initiatives between 2023 and 2025, that may collectively ship an extra 500,000 barrels of oil equal per day at peak manufacturing”, Shell mentioned in an announcement on its Malaysia web site.

GKGJE is a three way partnership of British power large Shell, Houston-based ConocoPhillips, Malaysia’s state-owned Petroliam Nasional Bhd. (Petronas), Thailand’s state-owned PTT Exploration and Manufacturing Public Co. Ltd., Indonesia’s state-owned PT Pertamina (Persero) and Housto-based Murphy Oil Corp.

“This occasion marks one other milestone within the cross-border collaboration between Malaysia and Brunei, reinforcing regional cooperation in deepwater oil manufacturing”, Petronas mentioned individually.

“Led by the Unitization Administration Committee – a joint effort between MPM [Malaysia’s upstream regulator] and Brunei’s Nationwide Unitization Secretariat – the collaboration streamlined insurance policies, optimized logistics and enhanced operational effectivity, setting a brand new benchmark for cross-border petroleum actions”, it added.

Part 4 output flows to the prevailing Gumusut-Kakap semi-submersible floating manufacturing system off the coast of Sabah.

Gumusut-Kakap, positioned in water depths of 1,200 meters (3,937.01 toes), began up 2014 as Shell’s first deepwater challenge in Malaysia. Its second and third phases achieved first oil August 2019 and July 2022 respectively. Part 2 developed 4 extra tieback wells whereas part 3 consisted of two oil producer and two water injection wells.

In March 2021, Brunei’s Nationwide Unitization Secretariat and Petronas signed an settlement on the phrases of the unitization of the GKGJE fields’ oil and fuel discoveries in Borneo, an island that Brunei and Malaysia share with Indonesia. Sabah Shell Petroleum Co. Ltd. was appointed as operator of the GKGJE unit space.

In one other Malaysian challenge, Shell and its companions put onstream the Jerun fuel discipline final 12 months.

Positioned about 160 kilometers (99.4 miles) off the coast of Sarawak state, on the Malaysian facet of Borneo, the event targets to supply 550 million cubic toes per day.

Former operator SapuraOMV, which held a 40 p.c stake, found the Block SK408 discipline 2016 after a two-year drilling marketing campaign that opened up 9 wells. TotalEnergies SE took over the block final 12 months by buying SapuraOMV, a three way partnership between native participant Sapura Power Bhd. and Austria’s state-backed OMV AG. Sarawak Shell Bhd. and Petronas Carigali Sdn. Bhd. every owns 30 p.c within the block.
