A tanker hauling Russian crude from the Baltic Sea to India that was noticed heading towards the Shetland Islands — a route that will have taken it on a detour across the northern tip of the UK — made a sudden flip and as a substitute took a more-typical journey by way of the English Channel.

The Aframax tanker Attica, which was sanctioned by the UK final month for carrying Russian oil, was on Thursday noticed heading on a route that will have taken it across the north of the UK on its voyage to the Suez Canal, ship monitoring compiled by Bloomberg reveals.

However the vessel made a u-turn and headed south towards the English Channel hours after Bloomberg printed a narrative highlighting its uncommon route. On Friday, it was passing the stretch of water between the UK and France and by Monday was shifting towards northern Spain.

The unique route across the north of the UK would have added about two days, or 25%, to its journey from the Baltic to the Mediterranean Sea.

Three UK authorities our bodies are working collectively to problem Moscow’s so-called shadow fleet perceived to have doubtful insurance coverage in the event that they move by way of UK waters. One vessel that ignored the problem was subsequently blacklisted.

A spokeswoman for the UK’s Division for Transport mentioned it didn’t touch upon particular person instances when requested concerning the vessel.

The Attica loaded about 730,000 barrels of Urals crude at Russia’s Ust-Luga export terminal, near St. Petersburg on the Baltic Sea, and is hauling it to Vadinar in India, based on transport data seen by Bloomberg. It’s going through the Egyptian waterway.
