Merz Expects US Exemption for Rosneft in Germany

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated he is optimistic that the US will exempt Rosneft PJSC’s German unit from Washington’s newest sanctions in opposition to Russia.

“We’ll talk about this with the People,” Merz informed reporters at a European Union summit in Brussels on Thursday. “I assume {that a} corresponding exemption for Rosneft shall be granted.”

The chancellor added that it was truly unclear whether or not the German enterprise, Rosneft Deutschland, “even wants” an exemption, because the penalties say Rosneft should personal a minimum of 50 % of the enterprise. “It’s 50 %,” he stated.

There are considerations that Rosneft’s German unit could also be lower off from key clients with no US sanctions exemption, Bloomberg reported earlier. Oil merchants, banks and oil firms have already threatened to finish relationships with the corporate.

Merz welcomed the newest US sanctions in opposition to Russia on Thursday as a sign of President Donald Trump’s dedication to stress Russia into ending its warfare in opposition to Ukraine.

The brand new US sanctions give clients till Nov. 21 to withdraw from “any entity” that is greater than 50 percent-owned by the penalized Russian companies.

Whereas Germany put Rosneft’s native belongings beneath a short lived trusteeship after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, it stopped in need of nationalizing the enterprise. Which means Berlin will probably have to barter a carve out from the newest restrictions.
