McDermott and its consortium companion GE have signed an settlement with TenneT for the award of two HDVC contracts in Germany with a EUR 4 billion ($4.3 billion) price ticket. The contract can be awarded in April 2023.

It’s a part of a wider, five-year Framework Cooperation Settlement, underneath which GER Renewable Power’s Grid Options enterprise secured three Excessive-Voltage Direct Present (HVDC) contracts for a complete of roughly EUR 6 billion ($6.5 billion) as a part of a specifically shaped consortium with Sembcorp Marine for TenneT’s 2GW program within the Netherlands. The settlement has an choice to be prolonged for one more three years.

The 5 contracts for the GE consortia are amongst 11 two-gigawatt (GW) contracts awarded to HVDC suppliers by the Dutch-German Transmission Methods Operator (TSO) as a part of its objective to attach 40 GW of offshore wind farms to the excessive voltage grids within the Netherlands and Germany, GE’s assertion reads.

TenneT’s large-scale mission resulted from the Esbjerg Declaration in Could 2022 on the North Sea Power Summit, the place Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Belgium agreed to collectively set up no less than 65 GW of offshore wind power by 2030 – up from 20 GW as we speak – to speed up Europe’s power safety following current geopolitical developments. TenneT plans to put in 20 GW every within the Dutch and German North Sea, GE reminded.

GE additional stated that the consortia tasks cowl the offshore converter platforms and the onshore converter stations for the two-way conversion between alternating and direct present. The converter stations are primarily based on bipolar Voltage-Sourced Converter (VSC) know-how – essentially the most superior HVDC know-how – and can have double the capability in comparison with earlier monopole grid connection programs, leading to fewer cables and platforms.

“TenneT has the technical know-how, scale, and geographical place to attach wind power from the North Sea, whereas GE and its consortium companions have the HVDC experience. Collectively, with the GE consortia and different HVDC companions we’ll speed up the event of the offshore grid, thereby strengthening Europe’s power safety and placing Europe on monitor to turn out to be the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050,” Tim Meyerjürgens, TenneT COO, stated.

“Along with our consortium companions Sembcorp Marine and McDermott, we’re honored and happy to play a key position on this important infrastructure mission for European power safety and decarbonization. These awards affirm that GE’s Voltage-Sourced Converter HVDC know-how is now acknowledged as one of the vital superior on the earth,” added Philippe Piron, CEO of GE Grid Options.
