Eni SpA stated Thursday it had launched the authorization course of for an Environmental Influence Evaluation to construct a biorefinery and a chemical recycling plant in Sicily, after receiving approval from Italy’s Atmosphere and Vitality Safety Ministry.

Designed to provide as much as 500,000 metric tons each year (MMtpa) of hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) diesel and sustainable aviation gasoline (SAF), the Priolo undertaking will rise on the location of an Eni ethylene plant set to be decommissioned, the state-backed vitality main stated in a press launch.

It will likely be Eni’s second biorefinery in Sicily, after the Gela plant, which started biofuel manufacturing 2019 after being reworked from a petrochemical web site, in line with Eni.

The Priolo biorefinery might be fed primarily by vegetable waste and oils and animal fat, Eni stated.

In addition to the Ecofining™ plant, the undertaking will embrace a biogenic feedstock pre-treatment unit and a hydrogen manufacturing plant, it stated.

In the meantime the undertaking’s chemical recycling unit could have a processing capability of 40,000 MMtpa and produce round 32,000 MMtpa of pyrolysis oil, Eni stated.

The recycling plant will use the proprietary Hoop expertise of Eni’s chemical compounds enterprise Versalis SpA, primarily based on the pyrolysis of combined plastic packaging waste.

The Priolo undertaking would be the first deployment of the expertise at a business scale, after the decommissioning of an indication plant on the Versalis plant in Mantua in June, Eni stated.

“This expertise, which enhances mechanical recycling, transforms combined plastic waste into uncooked materials for the manufacturing of recent plastic merchandise appropriate for all purposes, together with meals contact and pharmaceutical packaging”, Eni stated.

Developed from a joint undertaking with Italian engineering firm Servizi di Ricerche e Sviluppo SRL, the expertise has excessive materials restoration yields and feedstock flexibility, in line with Eni.

Final month Eni stated it had obtained approval from the ministry to transform a number of items on the Sannazzaro de’ Burgondi refinery in Pavia right into a biorefinery.

The refinery will proceed conventional operations alongside a brand new processing capability of 550,000 MMtpa for biofuel feedstock, primarily waste and residues. Anticipated to begin operations 2028, the biorefinery could have the flexibleness to provide SAF and HVO diesel.

“Eni has now began the authorization course of and has filed an software for Environmental Influence Evaluation”, Eni stated in a press launch September 23.

“The undertaking entails changing the present Hydrocracker unit utilizing Ecofining™ expertise and establishing a pre-treatment unit for waste and residues, that are the principle biogenic feedstocks Enilive makes use of to provide HVO biofuels”, Eni added. Enilive is Eni’s biofuels arm.

“The brand new Sannazzaro biorefinery will strengthen the location’s strategic function in supplying conventional jet gasoline and SAF to north-west Italian airports, by way of each the pipeline connection to Milan Malpensa airport and depots related to the refinery close to different airports”, it stated.

“Via Enilive, Eni is already the second-largest producer of HVO biofuels in Europe, together with each diesel and biojet (SAF)”, the corporate stated.

Eni has set objectives to develop its biorefining capability from the present 1.65 million metric tons each year (MMtpa) to over three million by 2028 and greater than 5 MMtpa by 2030, with the potential to provide as much as two MMtpa of SAF by 2030.

Eni’s present biofuels manufacturing come from two Italian vegetation in Venice and Gela and a United States plant in Louisiana, operated underneath its 50 percent-owned three way partnership St Bernard Renewables LLC, in line with the corporate.

“A 3rd Italian biorefinery is because of come on stream in Livorno in 2026, adopted by two vegetation at the moment underneath development in Malaysia and South Korea; an additional biorefinery in Italy has been introduced for Priolo, Sicily”, Eni stated.
