Eni SpA, Euglena Co Ltd and Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) have held a groundbreaking ceremony for a biorefinery with a processing capability of 650,000 metric tons each year in Pengerang, Johor, Malaysia.

Concentrating on a 2028 begin of operations, the power is anticipated to provide sustainable aviation gas (SAF), hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) and bio-naphtha, in response to a joint assertion.

Feedstocks will embody wastes corresponding to used vegetable oils and animal fat, in addition to residues from processed vegetable oils.

“Leveraging the synergy and power of our partnership, the brand new biorefinery is one in all Petronas’ key initiatives to ship on our power transition technique by way of a holistic bio-based worth chain and an expanded suite of cleaner power options”, mentioned Petronas govt vice chairman and chief govt for downstream Sazali Hamzah. “That is in lockstep with Petronas’ bigger aspiration to change into an built-in power chief within the subsequent decade, serving the world’s power wants, safely, reliably and sustainably”.

Euglena founder and president Mitsuru Izumo mentioned, “This undertaking represents a world endeavor and a strong step towards decarbonization and a extra sustainable future, by way of enhanced clear power provide capability, notably throughout the ASEAN area and past”.

“In our continued efforts to broaden decarbonization options in response to local weather change, we are going to proceed to put money into analysis and improvement of microalgae, and advance our efforts towards the commercialization of algal biofuel”, Izumo added.

Stefano Ballista , chief govt of Eni biofuels arm Enilive, mentioned, “With Enilive’s biorefineries which are already operational in Italy and in the USA of America, and with new crops underneath development in Italy and South Korea, the brand new biorefinery in Pengerang is an extra and related step ahead in the direction of the achievement of a manufacturing capability over 5 million tons per 12 months and over two million tons of SAF by 2030, supporting the rising want for extra sustainable mobility”.

Commercial – Scroll to proceed

Italy’s state-backed power main Eni has set targets to develop its biorefining capability to over three MMtpa by 2028 and greater than 5 MMtpa by 2030, with the potential to provide as much as two MMtpa of SAF by 2030.

Eni’s present biofuels manufacturing come from two Italian crops in Venice and Gela and a United States plant in Louisiana, operated underneath its 50 percent-owned three way partnership St Bernard Renewables LLC, in response to the corporate.

Earlier this 12 months Eni started development for a biorefinery undertaking with LG Chem on the latter’s Daesan Chemical Complicated in South Korea.

Focused for completion 2027, the plant may have an annual bio-feedstock processing capability of about 400,000 metric tons and produce HVO and SAF, Eni mentioned August 4.

Eni mentioned final month it had launched the authorization course of for an Environmental Affect Evaluation to construct one other biorefinery and a chemical recycling plant in Sicily, after receiving approval from Italy’s Atmosphere and Vitality Safety Ministry.

Designed to provide as much as 500,000 metric tons each year of HVO diesel and SAF, the Priolo undertaking will rise on the positioning of an Eni ethylene plant set to be decommissioned, Eni mentioned in a press launch October 9.

Eni mentioned will probably be its second biorefinery in Sicily, after the Gela plant, which started biofuel manufacturing 2019 after being reworked from a petrochemical website.

The Priolo biorefinery can be fed primarily by vegetable waste and oils and animal fat, Eni mentioned.

On September 23 Eni mentioned it had obtained approval from the ministry to transform a number of models on the Sannazzaro de’ Burgondi refinery in Pavia right into a biorefinery.

The refinery will proceed conventional operations alongside a brand new processing capability of 550,000 metric tons a 12 months for biofuel feedstock, primarily waste and residues. Anticipated to start out operations 2028, the biorefinery may have the flexibleness to provide SAF and HVO diesel.

“The brand new Sannazzaro biorefinery will strengthen the positioning’s strategic position in supplying conventional jet gas and SAF to north-west Italian airports, through each the pipeline connection to Milan Malpensa airport and depots linked to the refinery close to different airports”, Eni mentioned.

“By means of Enilive, Eni is already the second-largest producer of HVO biofuels in Europe, together with each diesel and biojet (SAF)”, the corporate mentioned.
