ADNOC to Assist Scale Up Startup 44.01’s CO2-to-Rock Expertise

Earthshot Prize-winning firm 44.01 will scale up its carbon dioxide (CO2) mineralization expertise within the United Arab Emirates with help from Abu Dhabi Nationwide Oil Co. (ADNOC) following a profitable pilot, the businesses mentioned Tuesday.

On December 5, 2023, Oman-based 44.01 introduced what it known as the world’s first mineralization undertaking that makes use of seawater to inject CO2 into peridotite rock formations. This pilot undertaking, positioned within the Emirate of Fujairah, had help from ADNOC, Masdar and Fujairah Pure Sources Corp.

The undertaking has been efficiently accomplished, completely mineralizing 10 tonnes of CO2 inside Fujairah’s peridotite formations in underneath 100 days, the businesses advised the continuing ADIPEC exhibition and convention within the UAE capital.

“Constructing on this achievement, the primary section of scale-up will inject greater than 300 tonnes of CO2 over an extended period to reveal the potential of the expertise to be deployed at scale within the UAE”, ADNOC mentioned in a web based assertion.

“At scale, peridotite mineralization might eradicate billions of tons of carbon emissions, serving to decarbonize important industries and take away CO2 from the environment”, it added.

44.01 chief government Talal Hasan, who co-founded the startup in 2020, mentioned, “Our pilot undertaking with ADNOC demonstrated the viability of carbon mineralization within the UAE”.

“We’re happy to be collaborating on scaling up operations and persevering with to refine our expertise on the best way to demonstrating commerciality”.

Ali Qasem, director-general of Fujairah Pure Sources, mentioned, “We’re dedicated to supporting such revolutionary applied sciences that strengthen our efforts to attain sustainable growth objectives”.

“The presence of peridotite formations in Fujairah provides distinctive potential to implement initiatives like this on a big scale, serving to us scale back our carbon footprint and help environmental methods”, Ali added.

ADNOC chief expertise officer Sophie Hildebrand mentioned, “Carbon seize is a vital instrument to cut back carbon emissions and meet international local weather objectives and we look ahead to scaling up this undertaking and confirming the business viability of carbon mineralization”.

44.01, often known as Protostar Group Ltd., says its expertise works by accelerating the millennia-long strategy of CO2 mineralization to underneath a 12 months. The mineralized CO2 not escapes into the environment, in line with the corporate.

It goals to seize trade CO2 emissions and dissolve the CO2 in water that individuals can’t eat resembling handled wastewater and seawater. “Dissolve CO₂ in water creates a type of glowing water”, it explains on its web site. “This glowing water, or injection fluid, is acidic and mobilizes cations inside the rock that react with the CO2 and mineralize it”. 44.01 makes use of rocks that react naturally with CO2 resembling peridotites.

“The injection fluid is injected deep underground, far deeper than any underground sources of consuming water”, says 44.01, named after the molecular mass of CO2. “The fluid is denser than any water within the subsurface, that means it could’t rise again in direction of the floor. Underground, due to elevated strain and temperature, and due to the excessive focus of CO2 within the injection fluid, the mineralization response takes place in a short time.

“The carbonated injection fluid spreads into the rock deep underground. The injection fluid is acidic and when this acidic fluid makes contact with the rock it dissolves minerals and extracts ions that react with the CO₂ to create carbonates, or extra rock”.

44.01 gained the 2022 Earthshot Prize for the expertise. This 12 months, 44.01 and Aircapture’s Mission Hajar, which goals to seize CO2 from the environment for injection in Oman’s peridotite rocks, was chosen as a top-20 finalist of the XPRIZE Carbon Removing contest. Oman is believed to have the globe’s largest focus of peridotites.
